“A Perfect Weekend Break” ~ Tripadvisor

“A Perfect Weekend Break” ~ Tripadvisor

After an enjoyable stay at the Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel last year we paid a return trip earlier this month.
Physically we noticed that the new Orangery Restaurant, which was under construction in 2012, was now complete and open for business and a beautiful – yet sympathetic – addition it is. In keeping with the décor of the restaurant, the menu was modern although limited – but this was an indication that everything was freshly prepared in the kitchen and most definitely NOT of the bought-in ready meals type that many hotels provide these days. The dishes which our party sampled were beautifully presented, extremely tasty and – despite their appearance – very filling. Alternatively, for those who prefer a more informal dining experience, there is a good selection of bar meals available in the adjacent bar area and these too we can say are indicative of a kitchen which is at the top of its game.

Moving on to the accommodation, guest rooms are located in an adjacent purpose-built block which has two floors. There isn’t a lift that we could see so if any of your party has difficulty in climbing stairs it’s best to point this out at the time of booking and request a ground floor room.

Our rooms were spacious and looked to have been recently renovated. They had a well-presented bathroom (bath plus overhead shower), flat screen tv (freeview channels only) plus the usual tea / coffee making facilities. The beds were comfortable with a modern duvet and the rooms were expertly serviced each day.

So far so good – excellent food and clean comfortable rooms – but what about that third important ingredient which makes or breaks a good stay – the staff?

Well here too you need have no worries. On both of our stays at the West Retford Hotel we encountered nothing but the friendliest yet professional service. Everyone from reception staff to room maids to bar staff to restaurant staff to the maintenance man we met, all had a cheery disposition and nothing was too much trouble for any of them. (But this something that we have come to expect from a Best Western hotel – it goes with the territory !).

Ok, the hotel is fine we hear you say, but why Retford? What’s there?

Well, we just love Retford. It is a beautiful old market town in itself but it is also an excellent base for trips to nearby Newark, Sheffield, Lincoln and Nottingham whilst for shopaholics the Meadowhall shopping mall is only some 20 miles away.

So, to come to that key question – would we go back?

Well, to paraphrase Arnie ………. “We’ll be back !”
